Former Treasury Secretary Summers Leaves from OpenAI Board

Leadership Change
The economist declared he would step back from public roles after Congressional panel made public his repeated messages with Epstein

Ex-Treasury chief the Harvard professor is exiting the governing body at the artificial intelligence firm, just a week after a batch of electronic messages between him and notorious criminal Jeffrey Epstein became publicly available.

Summers commented in a release that he was "grateful for the opportunity to have served, excited about the promise of the company, and eagerly await tracking their development".

The prominent academic, who formerly headed the prestigious university, stated on earlier this week that he would be scaling back from public responsibilities due to his relationship with the convicted sex offender.

Email Communications

The recently released messages demonstrated that Summers communicated with Epstein until the day before the financier's 2019 arrest for alleged trafficking of minors.

In another announcement, the artificial intelligence company expressed it accepted Summers' decision to depart.

"We acknowledge his many contributions and the insight he provided to the directors," the organization commented.

Congressional Action

This development arrives after the two houses of the legislative branch agreed on Tuesday to pass a legislation that would mandate the Department of Justice to disclose its files on Jeffrey Epstein.

The measure will afterward head to the office of the White House for endorsement. He has said he expects to sign the bill, after modifying his position on the issue following pushback from his base.

Email Contents

A batch of financier-linked emails disclosed by the Congressional committee recently referenced numerous prominent individuals in the billionaire's former circle, without suggesting any legal wrongdoing by those individuals.

The messages indicated that Summers and Epstein regularly had dinners together, with the billionaire often attempting to introduce the academic to notable international personalities.

Personal Response

After the correspondence were shared with the public, Summers stated he accepted "total ownership for my ill-advised decision to continue corresponding with Mr Epstein".

He added that he desired "to restore confidence and fix connections with the persons closest to me".

Career Background

The economist occupied senior posts under Democratic administrations; serving as Treasury chief under Bill Clinton, and as leader of the economic advisory body under President Obama.

He led the university from 2001 to 2006 and is still a academic there. When stating his withdrawal from public commitments recently on Monday, he stated he would persist with his academic responsibilities.

Additional Consequences

Following his declaration on earlier this week, the policy organization, a left-leaning research organization in DC where he was a senior fellow, announced that Summers was no longer connected with the organization.

Summers entered the leadership of the technology firm, which creates ChatGPT, in 2023 - following a unsuccessful effort to remove its chief executive OpenAI's head.
