A trio of officers were killed and at least 15 people sustained injuries in an apparently intentional gas explosion at a country home in the northern part of Italy.
The blast took place as officers and emergency crews went into the residence near Verona to carry out an removal notice for a brother and sister trio in their late 50s and mid-60s.
All three officers killed were members of the Carabinieri military police.
One male and one female were arrested at the scene and a third person who ran away after the explosion was apprehended shortly later. All three have been admitted to the hospital.
The detonation could be audible as far as 3 miles distant and images from the location revealed the building turned into a mass of wreckage.
“We are in a period of mourning,” commented the Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who mentioned that attempts had been made to remove the brother and sister trio in the previous occasions.
The leader of the region of Veneto, the regional head, said the farmhouse was subject to an court order due to unpaid amounts accrued by the siblings.
Negotiators had been dispatched to engage the family members who had barricaded themselves into the home. When the Carabinieri came just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities suspect one of the siblings triggered the detonation.
“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” provincial police commander Commander Papagno told news outlets.
A gas canister had been activated, and the detonation directly hit our personnel,” he added.
Petrol bombs were also found at the residence, the Interior Minister stated.
Those injured by the blast consisted of eleven more officers of the military police as well as a trio of personnel of national police and a fire services member.
As stated by the local prosecutor, the building was in a poor condition and had was without power.
He was convinced the explosion had occurred on a floor above the entrance and informed journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Shortly before the incident, he said personnel had “heard a whistle, presumably the propane tanks being opened”.
“We all knew the situation was dire,” local residents told local news, noting that the three had previously threatened to “detonate the property” rather than be evicted.
“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”
Defence Minister the Defence Minister joined other government officials in honoring the three men who had died in the performance of their duties.
